There's always something kind of cool about crossing a state line while you're on a roadtrip ... it's not quite an international frontier, but it's close enough. On the major highways, of course, the state-line signs are all glossy and professional, the products of ad agencies and tourism promotion boards ... but out on the backroads things are nearly always less polished, and therefore more interesting.
I shot this photo about three years ago -- it's all you see when you drive into Montana on the dirt road coming up from Lightning Flat, Wyoming. And yes, there really is such a place ...
